Local Area

Puebla de Sanabria is a small, tranquil town close to the Portuguese border; in fact it is a mere 42 km from the beautiful Portuguese town of Braganca. A medieval town, Sanabria was built high-up for defensive measures and was the site of a great many battles. The town has been declared a Historic-Artistic site by the Spanish government due to its wonderful historic buildings such as the 15th century castle which measures up to 960 metres in height. This incredible building features a large keep and is one of the best preserved castles in the province of Zamora, dominating the Tera river valley. Other noteworthy historic buildings include the medieval town hall, the fine 12 century Romanesque church, and a number of ancient ancestral homes scattered throughout the town adding to the authentic atmosphere.

The surrounding area is a beautiful nature spot with plenty of hills and lakes – making it an ideal centre for outdoor activities such as riding, hiking, and mountain biking, fishing and canoeing. Lake Sanabria is the area’s most prized treasure, it being the largest glacial lake in Spain. The lake, measuring 55 feet deep, is surrounded by beautiful valleys and rolling hillsides which make up the Lake Sanabria Nature Reserve. Home to over 1500 plant varieties and 142 species of bird, this truly is a haven for nature lovers. The most striking feature is the impressive lake which holds somewhat of a mystic quality, enhanced by the fact that it dates back thousands of years. Sanabria has plenty to offer in terms of nature, outdoor sports, and very rich in history, with something sure to interest every kind of visitor.
