Historic palace and monastery (4*)
Perched on the highest point of the small Galician town of Monforte de Lemos, to the southeast of Santiago and surrounded by the rural area known as Ribeira Sacra, is a complex of impressive historic buildings: a medieval keep, the 16th-century Condes de Lemos Palace, and the 17th-century monastery of San Vicente del Pino. The Parador de Monforte occupies both the palace and the neoclassical monastery buildings dated back to the 9th century, the latter incorporating a magnificent central arcaded cloister, and the former including three splendid function rooms and a banqueting room with a capacity for 300 people.
The Parador’s interiors incorporate the building’s original stonework and tiling with its contemporary décor. Similarly guestrooms are spacious and bright with simple designs that blend perfectly with the historical building. Despite its historic facade, the Parador de Monforte offers a wide range of facilities you'd expect of a contemporary 4-star hotel including a fully equipped gym, jacuzzi, as well as a seasonal outdoor pool and garden area, there is also a golf course located a mere 3 km from the Parador.
Monforte de Lemos is an important municipality in Galicia due to the efforts to preserve many of the town’s historical buildings, some of which date back to the 13th century and whose old quarter has been declared a ‘Property of Cultural Interest’ by the Spanish government. The Parador, which occupies the San Vicente de Pino Monastery, boasts one of the best views of the town and its surroundings. Among the historical treasures are several churches, the Clarisse Convent (with its Museum of Sacred Art), and the San Jacinto Convent.
The Nosa Señora da Antiga's School is one of the town’s most prized buildings. Measuring 100m in length, the building’s design was influenced by the famous El Escorial monastery. Building began in the 16th century and was finally completed in the early 20th century. The school’s museum features works by El Greco and Andrea del Sarto among others artists. This is also a fantastic town for nature lovers as it borders on natural beauty spots of the Ribera regions such as the Sil River Canyon and the picturesque Sierra de O Courel mountains. Activities in the area include horse riding, cycling, canoeing, boat river tours and hiking.
This Parador is scheduled to close between 1st January to 15th May 2026 for refurbishment.
