Description
Pousada da Horta - Converted 16th-century fortress
Faial, one of the most beautiful of the Azores islands, is known for its sunny climate, and was called Ilha Azul (‘Blue Island’) by the poet Raul Brandão on account of the swathes of hydrangeas that bloom there in the summer. This comfortable Pousada, with its elegantly furnished rooms and its swimming pool, overlooks Horta, the island’s main town. Formerly an inn, the Pousada is located within the 16th-century fortress of Santa Cruz, and there are magnificent views across the marina to the amazing Pico Island, with its spectacular volcano, Ponta de Pico, the highest peak on Portuguese territory.
