Description
Parador de Baiona (Bayona) - Galician fortress (4*)
Magnificently located on the north west coast of Spain and close to the Portuguese border, the Parador de Baiona is a traditional Galician manor house encompassed within the walls of a medieval fortress originally intended to deter pirates from this stretch of coast (Sir Francis Drake was repelled by the inhabitants of Baiona in 1585). Water surrounds 3 sides of the Parador highlighting its strength as a fortress and its appeal as a hotel set in a truly splendid location.
Flaunting Galician character from the buildings’ architecture through to the truly remarkable historic interior, Baiona’s Parador features timber beams and vaultings and a grand central staircase. A number of the bedrooms have splendid sea views which we highly recommend and are available at a supplement. The lush green gardens and outside swimming pool (open in peak summer) enable guests to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of this idyllic Parador.
You can walk to the town centre of Baiona, its lively waterfront and quaint fishing port are worth a visit, and the tremendous scenery along this coast and inland make it very enjoyable for those travelling by car. The old town of Baiona is charming with lovely streets and excellent restaurants to discover.
Baiona has an interesting monument to perhaps its most important moment in history when La Pinta, one of Columbus's ships sailed into its harbour to first proclaim the discovery of America in 1493, 3 days before Columbus arrived in Lisbon.
Keytel Tips
- Fantastic views of the sea and 1km of walls to walk round.
- Consider upgrading to a larger room with views. The superior rooms, junior suites and suites have marvellous sea views, the standard rooms are lovely but typically don't have sea views.
- Continental breakfast can be ordered with room service in the bedroom free of charge.

August 10, 2023 at 3:08 pmThis Parador has a stunning location on the Atlantic headland. The Parador is palatial and our Junior Suite had fabulous sea views. The food was good. We enjoyed exploring the gardens within the walls of the fortress and the very pretty town.
