Castilian Manor House (4*)
The Parador de Tordesillas is situated just across the river from the historic town of Tordesillas. A traditional Castilian manor house, it has a fine pillared portico and an elegant interior, with a number of valuable antiques. Its location on the outskirts of the town affords it ample space in which you will find a well-sized garden, surrounded by a pine grove, a seasonal outdoor pool and a children’s play area. Meanwhile the Parador building itself houses a heated swimming pool, a gym and a sauna and a Turkish bath.
The Parador's communal spaces are large and airy, with dark wooden furniture and exposed beams adding to the manor-house atmosphere. Bedrooms are spacious and decorated in warm, welcoming colours featuring either floor-to-ceiling windows or balconies that look onto the gardens or pool area. The Parador de Tordesilla's restaurants with its wooden coffered ceiling and large windows offers a cosy atmosphere, and on warm you can enjoy a drink or a snack on the Parador's terrace.
The historic town of Tordesillas, located at an important crossroads between Valladolid and Salamanca, is famous as the site of the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas, by which Spain and Portugal agreed to divide the New World territories in 1494. It was also here that the tragic queen, Joanna of Castile (mother of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V), was confined during her final madness in the since-demolished royal palace.
Today there are still many fine, old buildings to be seen, including the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara, originally a palace built in the 14th century by King Alfonso XI and converted into a convent by his son, Pedro I the Cruel. Other points of interest are the church-museum of San Antolín, the church of Santa María (styled after El Escorial) and the Casas del Tratado (joined palaces where the Treaty was signed). You can also not fail to be charmed by Tordesillas' medieval square and the impressive medieval bridge (a great indicator that the town once acted as a defensive bastion).
Tordesillas enjoys an excellent location between Salamanca, Valladolid and Zamora, and is a popular stopover for guests travelling to Portugal from the ferry ports of Bilbao and Santander, and those travelling to and from Extremadura.
