Parador de Lorca

The Hotel

Stylish hotel encompassing 11th to 15th century archaeology (4*)

Sitting high above the Murcian city of Lorca, this unique Parador combines the impressive historical remains of the original castle’s fortifications with a 15th century synagogue, bringing together 3 major cultures – Islamic, Jewish and Christian - with exquisite modern architecture, affording guests a singular experience that boasts breath-taking views onto the surrounding countryside and rolling hills. Four architects worked on the Parador’s design and they have created an impressive and attractive hotel experience which you cannot fail to appreciate. Whilst the building itself is generally of new construction, much is made of the original archaeological site and of the ruins of the castle complex uncovered shortly before the Parador's construction, connecting the Parador directly with the antiquity of the site and giving it the feel of a much older property.

The Region of Murcia is often referred to by Spaniards as "La Huerta de Europa" (Europe’s Orchard), due to the quantity of produce grown here and its proud agricultural traditions. The Parador’s ‘Helios restaurant’ showcases the best in regional produce and guests can try superb regional gastronomy as well as an excellent selection of wines from the up-and-coming local areas of Yecla and Jumilla. In the summer months guests can enjoy magnificent vistas from the restaurant’s terrace, whilst indulging in a carefully-prepared buffet breakfast which is not to be missed.

Each of the 76 rooms is stylishly furnished, with some superior rooms offering coffee-making facilities anden-suite bathrooms, WIFI, LED televisions and a mini bar are a given. The 553 square metre convention and event room can be divided into three separate spaces and also features two function rooms, ideal for meetings or private dinners.

For guests more intent on enjoying some relaxation time, the Parador possesses a superb spa which features an indoor pool with panoramic views of the nearby mountain ranges, jacuzzi, sauna, caldarium, steam bath, bi-thermal showers and a number of treatment rooms.

The 13th Century Gothic Castle of Lorca, which today takes the name ‘Fortress of the Sun’, is immediately adjacent to the Parador and was declared a Historic Artistic Monument back in 1931.  We certainly recommend setting aside some time to visit this site and, if time allows, the city below also boasts an attractive collection of historical monuments and museums, such as the Embroidery and Archaeological Museums as well as the Palace of Guevara.

Local Area

Lorca is a picturesque town in the south-east of Spain with notable monuments in the cobbled streets of its historic centre. You can see clear evidence of the roman influence in Lorca’s architecture with several archaeological sites such as the Espolon Towers and you will discover a cornucopia of sites from several eras, portraying Lorca’s diverse historical origins. Lorca is a unique place that represents different ages through the passage of time, to make the most of this there is a special tourist train available to encourage exploration of the artistic and historical aspects of the town with the train visiting some of the town's museums.

Another great attraction worth visiting is the aforementioned 13th century Lorca Castle which is very hard to miss as it peers down onto the town from up on high. The style of this castle Gothic as evidenced by its vaulted ceiling. After the castle's restoration in the 15th century, it became a popular attraction for visitors to Lorca and was renamed as the Fortress of the Sun.

In addition to travel by car, Lorca is fairly well-connected via public transport with trains to Murcia taking just 45 minutes. There are also reliable bus services running from Lorca to cities such as Granada, Sevilla, Córdoba and Málaga.
