Lisbon is the best access point to explore the Alentejo region. Head south to Alcacer do Sal where you can spend two nights in a medieval Moorish castle in this ancient port town, famed for its role in the salt trade, where you can marvel at the interesting architecture or explore the nearby Estuário do Sado Nature Reserve and the lovely Atlantic beaches.

After this it is on to the quiet town of Arraiolos, famous for its rug-making industry, and ideal for a relaxing break in a tranquil setting.

Onwards to Vila Viçosa in the heart of the Alentejo region which is perfect for outdoor activities including hiking and birdwatching, for visiting the impressive Ducal Palace, or for exploring the nearby historic towns of Evora (for the Temple of Diana) and Borba.

Your fifth night will be spent in the charming town of Beja whose picturesque historic centre is sure to delight anyone with an interest in architecture or history. The town’s impressive 13th century castle is its crowning glory, along with the museums containing fascinating art collections, all of which can be enjoyed from your base in the town’s former convent.

The final two nights are based on the Algarve in the lovely town of Éstoi whose pride and joy is the opulent 19th century rococo palace with resplendent gardens, which today houses the magificent Pousada de Éstoi. This is the perfect place to relax surrounded by elegant furnishings and with easy drives to the Algarve coast. From here it just a brief 10km drive to Faro airport.
