Green Spain II

7-Night Itinerary

From the French border heading west and taking in the Picos de Europa, this route takes you through some of the most stunning scenery of northern Spain.

Suggested access airports: Bilbao/Biaritz

Parador de Hondarribia - Night 1

Hondarribia is one of the most beautiful fishermen villages on the Cantabrian Coast. We want to highlight its beautiful centre of the town, with its Puerta de Sta. María and its Calle Mayor (Main Street), with old “casonas” (houses). Among them, the Town Hall, the house of the painter Zuloaga, the Iriarte house and many more are especially interesting. Walking these streets is a true pleasure, especially if we combine it with the opportunity of enjoying the rich gastronomy. Visitors should also not miss visiting the port. San Sebastián, in only a few kilometres distance, should be a must for the visitor: a walk on the Concha Beach or through the old parte is only some items to enjoy in this beautiful town. Hondarribia is also located close to France and is a good starting point for trips to the French Atlantic Coast.

Parador de Argomaniz - Night 2

The Parador of Argómaniz is only in a few kilometres distance from Vitoria-Gasteiz. This town is offering a high quality of life without any doubt, with a large number of green areas. Visitors will find numerous museums in the city. All of them are located in buildings that may be visited for their own beauty. We may point out Artium, the Basque Museum for Contemporary Art, the Museum of Sacred Arts, the Museum of Natural Sciences or BIBAT, the Fournier Museum for Playing Cards and the Archaeological Museum. Visitors should not forget the beautiful cathedral of Sta. María or the medieval centre of the town, the churches of San Miguel and San Pedro, and the tower of San Vicente, the Villasuso Palace or the Montehermoso Palace.

Parador de Limpias - Night 3 & Night 4

The Church of San Pedro is one of the monuments to be visited in town. Close to Limpias, visitors may find many small interesting villages, like Laredo, Castro Urdiales and Santoña. One more key player during any trip in the surroundings will be the nature. So, guests may visit the Natural Park of Cabárceno or the valley of the Asón River. The two capital cities close to the Parador, Santander and Bilbao with its Guggenheim Museum, are also worth visiting..

Parador de Fuente De - Night 5

At the reception desk of the Parador of Cervera, they will show you several different ways of moving on to Fuente Dé, so that you may discover the beauty of the mountain range and the monumentality of the Picos de Europa. This majestic mountain range is located north of the Cordillera Cantábrica, and it is one of the most spectacular and beautiful mountain ranges of the whole Peninsula. Within the Picos de Europa, you may enjoy the National Park of the same name. The Parador is an excellent and privileged place to stay at if you want to know this spectacular natural landscape. Thanks to the cable ca of Fuente Dé, located close to the Parador, we may ascend in a very comfortable way to the heart of the central massif (also called “Urrieles”) or to the “Puertos de Áliva” mountain pass. The staff of the Parador will suggest you many routes to enjoy of this spectacular surroundings and give you the necessary recommendations.

Parador de Cangas de Onis - Night 6

Asturias finds in this landscape its expression at the highest. In the village of Cangas de Onís we suggest visiting the Old Roman Bridge, the Chapel of Santa Cruz and the Cortés Palace. Close to the Natural Park of the Picos de Europa, you should visit Casa Dago (The visitor’s reception bureau of the Natural Park). The Royal Site of Covadonga is on more spot of special interest in this area, together with the Covadonga Lakes (Enol and La Ercina) and the Cares River Route.

Parador de Vilalba - Night 7

Near Vilalba, highlights include the natural areas along the Magdalena and Ladra rivers and the Alligal Medicinal Pool (Charca Medicinal), with its thermal waters. We also recommend visiting the Museum of Prehistory and Archeology, Cospeito (10 km.), Lagunas de Valverde (10 km.), and Mondoñedo (25 km.), as well as the cathedral and Diocesan Museum.
