World Heritage City Route

5-Night Itinerary

With a rich and lengthy cultural history, it is no surprise that Spain has 15 World Heritage Cities, each offering a number of World Heritage Sites and wonderful architecture. This Parador route explores 4 of these fabulous cities all within an easy driving distance from Madrid.

Suggested access airports: Madrid

Parador de Toledo - Night 1

This route begins in Toledo, the City of Three Cultures, and one of Spain’s richest sources of culture and history which has held World Heritage status since 1986. Like many cities, Toledo has been occupied by Moorish, Jewish and Christian communities, each leaving a long-lasting cultural and artistic impact, and therefore gaining its aforementioned nickname. The town was famously the chosen home of artist El Greco with many tributes to the renaissance artist found throughout the city and places of interest include El Greco’s house-museum, the Bisagra Gate, the Alcazar and the synagogues of Santa María La Blanca and El Transito. From Toledo you can explore Castilla La Mancha, including the famous windmill ‘giants’ from Don Quijote in Consuegra.

Parador de Alcalá de Henares - Night 2

Following on the theme of Don Quijote, your second stop takes you to Alcalá de Henares, the birthplace of its writer Miguel de Cervantes. The town is a collection of lovely streets, palaces, convents, monasteries, and civil architecture. Alcalá invites you to discover its university (founded in 1499 by Cardinal Cisneros), Cervantes Square, the ruins of Santa María de la Mayor, the college streets of Sta. Ursula and Escritorios, the masterful Stos. Justo y Pastor Cathedral, and more. Nor should you miss a walk along bustling Calle Mayor, where you will find the house in which Cervantes was born.

Parador de Segovia - Night 3 & Night 4

Every corner and street of Segovia is etched in history and offers a new surprise. Its buildings speak of times long past, as remote as its aqueduct, which recalls the power of Rome. The cathedral and Alcázar, or fortress/palace, evoke a magnificent past, while churches such as San Esteban, San Justo, San Martín and San Millán transport us to the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Baroque period. Nearby must-sees include the Royal Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso (18th-century palace and gardens), and Riofrío Palace.

Parador de Ávila - Night 5

Avila’s impressive fortified walls shelter an incredible wealth of heritage and the Alcázar and San Vicente gates you pass through to enter the city are as lovely as the city itself. Areas of special note include the fortified San Salvador Cathedral (begun in the 11th century) and its museum, Santa Teresa Convent (17th-century), the palaces of the Nuñez Vela, Almarzara, and Ochoa Aguirre families, and the Archbishop’s Palace, among others. Ávila is a city filled with history, on every street, in every square, in every corner, every moment you explore it.
