Wine Route (Alava/Rioja/Navarra)

3 Night Itinerary

This Route is perfect for wine and nature combining visits to some of Spain’s most popular wine regions with stunning natural beauty.

Suggested access airports: Santander/Bilbao

Parador de Argomaniz - Night 1

The Parador is a great base for trips to the region of the Rioja Alavesa Wine. The Route is starts on the left side of the Ebro River, protected from the winds by the southern slopes of the “Sierra de Cantabria” range of mountains. The villages of the region preserve the charm of medieval villages situated among vineyards, and have a vast natural, archeological and artistic patrimony. Prestigious architects have put their footprint on the design of the new vineyards, like Marqués del Riscal, in Elciego; Santiago Calatrava con Ysios, in Laguardia: and Iñaki Aspiazu, with Bodegas Baigorri, in Samaniego.

Parador de Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fr. - Night 2

The town of Santo Domingo is an excellent starting point for discovering the Upper Rioja region and its wealth of heritage linked to wine and viniculture, famous throughout the world. We recommend a visit to the Ontañón Winery/Museum (Logroño), the Haro Enology Station in Haro, the Vivanco Museum of the Culture of Wine in Briones, as well as some of the vineyards in the Upper Rioja region which are open to visitors. Another possibility is following the Wine Architecture Route (Gehry, Calatrava, Moneo, etc.). In Santo Domingo you can explore the exenta, or stand-alone, cathedral tower, the cathedral itself (high altar, the saint’s mausoleum, hen’s cage, cloister). Nearby lies the town of San Millán de la Cogolla (San Millán de Yuso Monastery and San Millán de Suso Monastery).

Parador de Olite - Night 3

As you approach Olite and see the town silhouetted against the horizon, you will feel that much awaits your discovery. The town offers you the opportunity to discover the palace of the Kings of Navarre, Sta. María la Real Church, San Pedro Apóstol Church, and Carlos III Square. You can explore the world of wine in the Navarre Museum of Wine and Vineyards, which is located in the same lovely square as the Parador. Other highlights include the Piedemonte, Marco Real and Bodega Ochoa wineries.
