Description
Pousada de Belmonte - Modernized medieval convent
Under a mile from Belmonte in eastern Portugal – the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the first European to reach Brazil – the ruined convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança has been rebuilt as a luxurious modern Pousada. The ruins of the original convent have been incorporated into the new structure, and there is an original amphitheatre in the surrounding woodland. With panoramic views across the plain to the peaks of the Serra da Estrela this stylishly designed Pousada with its ecclesiastical origins and small 13th-century chapel offers a high level of modern-day comfort. All bedrooms are different but equally stylish and unusual.
